Amwell
Saturday, 5th January
This Herts & Middlesex Wildlife Trust reserve is a regular winter haunt for Smew and Goldeneye as well as being home to good numbers of several other species of duck. There are usually one or two Bitterns wintering which will hopefully allow us a glimpse or longer view as they go about feeding up before another cold night. Water Rails and Cetti's Warblers will be making themselves heard in and around the reedbeds. Siskins and Lesser Redpolls can often be found in the Alder trees and Marsh Tits are sometimes seen at the feeders by one of the hides. Buzzards are frequently seen soaring above the woods with Red Kites also possible. Yellow-legged and Mediterranean Gulls sometimes drop in to bathe in the freshwater lake among their commoner congeners and there are usually Little Egrets to be seen. There will be good numbers of common species such as thrushes, tits, finches and buntings making for a varied and interesting morning.
